Why Are You Staring at Heaven? Finding Faith for What’s Next

May 17, 2026    Gary Sandberg

As the Easter season comes to a close, Acts 1 invites us into a tender and honest moment with the disciples. Jesus calls them to be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth, but then he ascends, leaving them wondering what comes next.

This sermon reflects on what it means to follow Jesus when we feel unprepared, uncertain, or unsure of the next step. The good news is that the disciples do not begin by having all the answers. They begin by gathering together, staying connected, and devoting themselves to prayer.

What You’ll Learn:

Why the Ascension matters for how we understand following Jesus

What it means to be a witness in familiar and unfamiliar places

How the disciples responded when they felt ill-equipped

Why community matters when we are unsure what to do next

How prayer can ground us before we move into what God is calling us toward

Acts 1:6-14

John 17:1-11
