God, Grant Me Patience With

God, grant me patience with…
All throughout Lent Pastor Nate will be sharing reflections on ways to start a conversation with God. These short prayer prompts provide you with a way to begin your prayers on a variety of topics. Today, we reflect on patience in our life of faith.
There are a lot of things that can try my patience in any given day. Kids are particularly good at testing the limits of how long they can sleep in on a school day, or finding out how many times they can ignore a request to take out the trash.
In the moment, when my kids are completely ignoring the fact that it’s already 7:15 and we need to leave by 7:30, I don’t have a lot of grace or perspective, but as I sit here now and write these words I start to recognize how different things look depending on where you are in this problem.
You see, when I was a kid, my parents were always encouraging me to get ready in the morning. Most days, I would be running so behind that I’d have to fill a cup with cereal and milk and drink that as my breakfast on the way to the bus stop. Back then, I just wanted my parent’s to be a bit more patience, and my parents just wanted me to get my act together and get to school on time!
When we find ourselves losing our patience, there is likely good reason for our frustration, but in the same moment, there’s also good reason to take a step back and remember how patience God has been with us.
Think of all the times you messed up, all the times you’ve known the right thing to do but done the wrong thing anyways, all the times that you’ve tried to talk yourself out of what you know God wanted you to do. There’re probably more examples then you can even begin to count, and yet God has remained gracious and patient.
What a gift we have been given- the enduring patience of God despite our consistent sinfulness. Today, talk with God about your gratitude for this grace and how you might learn to show similar patience with those who get on your last nerve.
