God of the Oppressed, protect those who are vulnerable

God of the Oppressed, protect those who are vulnerable, especially…

All throughout Lent Pastor Nate will be sharing reflections on ways to start a conversation with God. These short prayer prompts provide you with a way to begin your prayers on a variety of topics. Today, we speak with God about those who are vulnerable.

When you closely examine the stories of scripture a very common theme seems to emerge. Again and again, God seems to choose the underdog.

Abram and Sarah were far too old to be the parents of a nation, and yet that is who God chose.

Jacob was the younger brother, and yet that is who God chose to be the father of all of Israel.

The Hebrews were slaves in Egypt, and yet God heard their call and led them to freedom and made them into the nation of Israel.

The theme continues with the life and ministry of Jesus. He called the fishermen and tax collectors to be his disciples. He spoke with foreign women and healed the outcasts and constantly argued with the elites Pharisees and Priests who thought their position made them better than others.

In short, the scriptures seem to continually tell the story of the ways that God cares specifically for the poor and vulnerable. In fact, Jesus embodies this very idea through his crucifixion where he allowed his public execution to be the very revealing of God’s power.

God cares deeply about the vulnerable and so as God’s people, we are called to hold the needs of those on the margins of society closely to our heart.

Today, take time to pray for those who you know that are suffering, lonely, hurting, or vulnerable.

God of the Oppressed, protect those who are vulnerable, especially…
