Prince of Peace, Calm my Mind When...

Prince of Peace, calm my mind when…
All throughout Lent, Pastor Nate will be sharing reflections on ways to start a conversation with God. These short prayer prompts provide you with a way to begin your prayers on a variety of topics. Today, we reflect on seeking God’s peace in the midst of anxious thoughts.
Our minds can be relentless. Have you ever found yourself lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, as your brain replays every mistake, every awkward moment, every worst-case scenario it can conjure? Anxiety has a way of creeping in at the most inconvenient times, whispering worries about things we can’t control and magnifying our fears until they feel overwhelming.
I remember when I would get scared as a kid, I would make a cross with my two pointer fingers and hold it over my heart, reminding myself that God was protecting me amidst my fear.
It wasn’t until years later that I read the words of Philippians 4:7: “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” What a beautiful image—that God’s peace doesn’t just enter our lives, but actively guards our hearts, like a protective shield, or two crossed index fingers, against the chaos that so often fills our thoughts.
Of course, knowing that God offers peace doesn’t always make it easy to accept. It takes practice to surrender our anxious thoughts to God, to trust that we don’t have to carry every burden alone. But each time we turn to God in prayer—each time we cross our fingers and choose trust rather than fear—we take a step toward resting in the calm assurance of God’s presence.
Today, talk with Jesus about the worries that weigh on your heart. Ask the Prince of Peace to quiet your anxious thoughts and fill your mind with his calming presence.
