The Book of Hebrews - The Grand Story of Salvation
“For this reason he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, because a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions under the first covenant.” – Hebrews 9:15
The book of Hebrews is a letter written to people who had come to faith in Jesus but were not eyewitnesses of Jesus’ ministry. The faith of the Hebrews was filled with excitement and hope but has waned over the years because of persecution. This letter seeks to encourage the people and remind them of the hope they have in Christ and how that hope is actually the culmination of the work of God that began with Israel.
The entire book is filled with powerful illusions to the story of Israel and theological connections between Israel’s story and the prophecies of the Old Testament and how those were fulfilled in Christ.
This letter was carefully constructed to encourage people during a time when their faith was wavering. The author chose to remind these wavering individuals of the story of Christ and the ways that this story connects and fulfills so much of what had been predicted and said before. In the same way, the book of Hebrews can encourage us when our faith wavers in the ways that it reminds us today that Christ is not just a passing fad, but rather the fulfillment of a divine promise between God and God’s people.
