The Joy of Lent

My family recently celebrated the birth of my niece’s son, Thoren, in February. As my father’s first great-grandchild, this was a much-anticipated event. My niece has been gracious enough to share photos and videos as I eagerly look forward to meeting this new baby in our family.

Talking with my niece and looking at pictures brought back memories of being a new parent. Bringing a new baby home often brings feelings of chaos with new challenges and dramatic lifestyle changes. It feels like a journey into an unknown wilderness. The journey brings tests that allow for learning, growth and redirection. And yet this journey brings much joy and wonderment as well.

In many ways, this mirrors Lent. It is a journey that invites us to enter a wilderness to explore and test and question. We can use this time to learn and grow in our faith. Although joy isn’t always a word associated with Lent, I would say that deepening our faith and recognizing who Jesus is and what he did for us is true joy and wonderment.
