The Book of 2nd Corinthians - The Importance of Reconciliation

“Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
2 Corinthians 12:8-10

Second Corinthians covers a wide variety of topics and many scholars believe that what is included in our Bibles may actually be not one letter to the Corinthians but the combination of several different letters to the church in Corinth.  While Paul does jump from topic to topic during the course of this letter, his primary focus seems to be to rehab his relationship with the Corinthian church.

The book contains many personal stories from Paul as he tries to reconnecting with the church he started and still loves.   While his efforts may seem self-centered, Paul is ultimately most concerned with helping the Corinthians see that the work of Christ to reconcile us to God is more valuable and important than anything else.

Throughout this book there are many words of practical advice for Paul to the church in Corinth.  However, taken as a whole, these communications between Paul and the Corinthian community from which he is estranged, encourage us to find hope in strength of God’s grace.  Though our lives today may be filled with fractured relationships or personal hardships, the grace of God is still stronger and able to repair that which is broken.
