The Book of 2nd Chronicles - Consequences of Unfaithfulness

"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land."
– 2 Chronicles 7:14

Second Chronicles, just like First Chronicles, is an extensive history of the nation of Israel.  In the book, the reader journeys through the highs and lows of Israelite monarchy.  Extensive attention is given to the reigns of King David and King Solomon and the expansion of Israel and the construction of the Temple.

But the narrative also moves on to include the stories of turmoil and division that exist within Israel’s history and the message form the author of this book is clear: Exilic situations result from unfaithfulness.   When we serve other gods we are pulled off course and will find ourselves in exile, be that a metaphorical or actual exile.

However, the hopeful current in this book is that redemption is possible.  God is willing to hear our repentance, forgive our unfaithfulness, and treat us with mercy, just as God has done with Israel again and again throughout its history.
