Veteran's Day Reflection

A Reflection for Veteran’s Day
Each year on Veteran’s Day, we pause to honor the men and women who have served in our armed forces. It’s a complicated kind of gratitude. As people of faith, we don’t glorify war or lift up violence as a solution. But we can hold deep respect for those who have sacrificed comfort, safety, and time with loved ones in the hope of protecting life and peace at home.

Jesus once said, “Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13)

These words aren’t a call to war, but a witness the kind of self-giving love that reflects the very heart of God. On this day, we honor that love wherever it is found: in those who served on distant battlefields, in medics who tended the wounded, in families who waited and prayed for their safe return.

To honor our veterans is not to glorify war, but to acknowledge the cost of it.   As people of faith, our truest tribute is to continue the work of protecting life and peace.  God’s hope for the world is that there would be healing where there is trauma; reconciliation where there is division; and an end to all conflict and violence everywhere.

Today’s prayer:
God of peace,
we thank you for those who have served with courage and compassion.
Heal the wounds of war — in body, mind, and spirit.
Teach us to honor their sacrifice by living as peacemakers in a world that longs for your peace.
Amen.
