Sacred Interruptions: How God Speaks Through Life's Detours

Have you ever felt frustrated by interruptions? You're not alone. But what if those interruptions are actually divine invitations?

Lately, I’ve been really noticing how Jesus is constantly interrupted throughout his ministry. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus is trying to do one thing and suddenly he’s forced to do something else. Crowds show up seeking healing; a woman reaches out for his cloak; urgent needs shift his plans. Yet, instead of resisting (like I would), Jesus embraces the interruptions as sacred moments where God is at work.

I think I’m attuned to this dynamic in the Gospels because it is so different than how I work. I HATE being interrupted. When I am focused on a task all I want to do is get that task done, then I can commence with the distractions.

I’m guessing many of us struggle with disruptions. In our fast-paced society, we crave efficiency and control and so interruptions seem like obstacles. But what if God is speaking through life’s detours?

As I look back on some of the detours of my life I can see now how God was using those moments to lead me to the places where I needed to be. The obstacles in my education process made me more resilient in the long term; the unexpected job offer just as things were feeling settled turned into a great move for my entire family; the friend who kept showing up turned out to be someone who really needed my help. God often works through the interruptions, it just might take us a little while to realize how God is guiding us.

This week on the Together 4 Good podcast, Bryan Jaster shares a powerful spiritual practice that helps us notice and embrace these sacred interruptions. It’s a simple yet transformative way to shift our perspective and recognize how God is moving in unexpected moments.
