The Book of Nehemiah - Reconstructing the Faith

"Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength." – Nehemiah 8:10b

Nehemiah continues the story of the reconstruction of Israel after exile that began in the book of Ezra.   Nehemiah’s job was specifically to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.  Yet the building of these physical structures serves as a spiritual metaphor for readers today.

Nehemiah’s rebuilding efforts are continuing met with resistance and struggle, and yet Nehemiah responds with hard work and prayer.  For modern day readers in the midst of their own rebuilding or their own struggles, the book of Nehemiah provides a simple yet compelling blueprint for how people of faith can face the difficult moments of life.

In the face of opposition, Nehemiah remained resolute and through prayer found the resolve to continue with his important task of protecting the community.  In the same way, when we face opposition, we can turn to prayer for strength, resolve, and guidance, for the joy of the Lord is our strength.
