Marks of Discipleship - Service and Ministry to Others

Discipleship isn’t about checking religious boxes—it’s about living from your identity as God’s beloved, deepening your relationship with Christ, letting your mind be renewed, showing up in community, and serving the world with love. In this devotional series, Pastor Nate shares reflections on different aspects of discipleship.

“Service and Ministry to Others”

For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters, only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence,[a] but through love become enslaved to one another. – Galatians 5:13

For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many.” – Mark 10:45

Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. – 1 Peter 4:10

God is at work restoring all of creation and we are called to be the hands of feet of God.   Our life as disciples always begins with God’s gracious action toward us but it never ends there.  In response to God’s grace, we go forth into the world to perpetuate the grace we ourselves have come to know.  Caring for others, reaching out to those in need, fighting for justice, and freely giving our time and talent to worthy causes are just some of the ways that we can respond to the activity of God in our life.

As disciples of Jesus, we carry forward the teachings and work of Jesus.  We know the joy of forgiveness, the hope of the resurrection, and the wonder of grace because of what Jesus revealed to us.  And so, moved by the forgiveness, grace, sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus we are called to “pay it forward”.  The love we know from Jesus is intended to be shared in small and big ways with those in our lives.

Our encounters with God’s grace and mercy compel us to serve others.  At the same time, these acts of service more fully reveal the grace and mercy of God to us.
