Rated PG: Thoughts on Isaiah 58

if you offer your food to the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the afflicted,
then your light shall rise in the darkness
and your gloom be like the noonday.- Isaiah 58:10

The people wanted to perform a ritual. God wanted to change their hearts.
The people performed a ritual fast, they went without eating. It just made them cranky. God wanted them to understand that as they go without food they should consider those who go without food, not based on a ritual, but because of their economic circumstances. As the people ended their own fasting God wants them to consider what they can contribute to the well being of others. Then their light will break forth like the dawn. The dawn’s light falls upon everyone. We honor God when we honor our neighbor in need.

God of compassion, use my sacrifice to bring you love to another.
