Rated PG: Thoughts on Matthew 5

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. - Matthew 5:3

Blessings are tricky. They can be classically associated with health, wealth, and strong families. Jesus interrupts this classical understanding by calling other people blessed, and by letting them know what they can expect.

It is challenging to feel blessed when we are supposed to feel it in unconventional ways. It may start with us, not relinquishing ourselves to be dealt with in sympathetic ways, but rather in asserting that God’s presence is enough for today. God’s presence can rewrite the classics. God is a master at taking what would appear to drag us down and recast it in a positive light. When we remain faithful in the midst of life’s challenges we allow God to do some of God’s best work.

God of blessings, help us to see through the world’s expectations to feel the blessings that you bestow upon us.
