New Beginnings

New Beginnings
By: Janet Mortinsen

When I participated in the Faith Community Nurse (FCN) course, we were taught that our role not only addressed physical and mental well-being, but also intentional care of the spirit. The ELCA has a wholeness wheel which emphasizes that wellness is multi-dimensional. This makes sense to me as often as one area is compromised, another one suffers as well.

One of my fellow Lutheran FCN’s has written practical health suggestions for each month of the year. As she is graciously sharing them, I will be incorporating them into 365 devotions.

As we begin the new year:
Mind – Choose a personal intention for the year and write why it matters.
Body - Create a simple movement goal for the year (walking, stretching, strength).
Spirit – Pray for guidance as you step into a new year.

New beginnings are often a theme for January. Isaiah 43:19 says, “I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” As we navigate a new year with new opportunities, God will be with us to offer us strength, presence and wisdom.
