Holy Saturday Spoken Word
Not enough is made
of the silence that pervaded
Jerusalem on that tragic day
When Jesus took his last breath
That’s the thing about death
It’s not loud or boisterous
It’s a diminishing
Even as the emotions of death seem to scream
The actual experience is
Silent.
But silence is actually a color
that God loves to paint with
The silence of Jesus’ grave
Was actually the cresting of a wave
It was the pause between what was and what will be
It was God claiming the silence as holy
In the beginning
before there was anything
There was nothing
Nothing else in the entire universe
Except God and silence.
God and a word about to be spoken.
Silence
isn’t a sign
of the end of time
Silence is the beginning.
It’s the space
where God’s grace
And the human race
Face one another
Moments of Silence
are the open moments
where God waits.
And Where God creates
By taking his time
rising from the tomb
Jesus touched and made holy
The days after death
That are almost solely
reserved for grief
That Saturday of waiting was meant as a reminder
that God can use
Silence
as creative instrument
On the day after his death
But before his rising
Jesus was reminding
us
of sacred pauses.
And that somehow
the absence of life
Or the absence of words
Or the absence of hope
Is the very abyss
that contains the life-giving power of God.
There is a secret in the lack.
A hope that can bring us back.
A wisdom a comfort a presence of God
that is so much deeper than words.
That Holy Saturday
between the cross and the empty grave
That space of morning and grief
those days
when you don’t know what to say-
they
are a place God has been.
And a place God will be. Amen.
