Renewed Opportunity

I started playing golf about 7-8 years ago. My improvement in the game has been slow, and my handicap remains high. However, I really do enjoy playing golf despite my ability. I played last Saturday early in the morning. I did have a pretty good, consistent round considering my game. I was wondering what exactly it is that brings me joy about golf (some rounds bring forth this question more than others). I certainly enjoy being out in nature and walking. Often there is wild life to appreciate. I enjoy my fellow golfers and the opportunity to meet new people while playing. These all seem extraneous to golf albeit important aspects. As I thought about the game itself, I landed on hope and a chance for redemption. Despite a drive that goes wayward or a chip that flies the green or a putt too short or too long or misread, there’s a chance to try again. The next good shot does not erase the past but helps to restore the belief that another good shot is possible.

Faith for me is also this sense of hope and renewed opportunity. When we go astray or fall short, we have a God who continues to love us and give us another chance to improve or change our path. Even in the midst of painful or difficult times, there can be beautiful moments, connections and lessons. Knowing that God will continue to be with us and show us grace despite our choices allows me to live a life with hope. And maybe that handicap will decrease this summer…
