The Book of Ephesians - Unity in Christ

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” - Ephesians 2: 8-10

Clear differences in the theology and writing style lead scholars to conclude that Ephesians, while attributed to Paul, was likely written by a contemporary.   While there are differences, the overall message of the letter is certainly in line with other writings from Paul.

In particular, the letter to the Ephesians is focused on a message of unity. The author makes it clear that because of Christ’s death and resurrection there is no longer separation between Jews and Gentiles, but rather all are called together under the gracious message of God revealed by Jesus Christ.

At the time of this letter, many were still expecting Christ’s return to earth, however such hope was beginning to change.  As we continue to wait for Christ’s return today, the words to the Ephesians provide us with practical advice for living grace-filled lives as we continue to keep watch for Christ’s return.  Regardless of when Christ returns, we are saved by grace through faith today and in response to this grace, we continue to love our neighbors.
