This We Believe - Crucifixion 3

Crucifixion 3
The life of faith encompasses several events and moments that we journey through multiple times during the course of a lifetime.  The devotion below is part of an ongoing series that explores these central themes of Christian doctrine.

“The cross was the price Jesus paid for living in a ‘mixed’ world, which is both human and divine, simultaneously broken and utterly whole.  He hung between a good thief and a bad thief, between heaven and earth, inside of both humanity and divinity, a male body with a feminine soul, utterly whole and yet utterly disfigured – all the primary opposites.”
- Richard Rohr

God is continually pained by the dichotomies of this world.  God allows humans free will and freedom and yet all too often, this freedom is abused and results in acts of evil.  This reality is what Jesus was confronting through his suffering on the cross.  Jesus willingly assumes the role of a victim to inspire us to cease our harmful treatment of each other.

Even in his death, Jesus is calling us to new life.  He calls us to stop looking for scape-goats by becoming the scape goat himself.  He calls us to work for end to human suffering by carrying the mystery of universal suffering himself.  He calls us to confront the human predicament within all of us by taking on the human predicament himself and putting it to death.
