The Book of 1st Thessalonians - Holy Living

“I pray that God, who gives peace, will make you completely holy. And may your spirit, soul, and body be kept healthy and faultless until our Lord Jesus Christ returns.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:23

Thessalonica is the site of a church starting by St. Paul for his he has great affection.  In his first letter to this congregation, it is clear that Paul has a special bond with this community and appreciation for their steadfast faith amidst persecution.

The letter contains a strong emphasis on remaining faithful until Christ’s return.  Paul is insistent that the Thessalonians continue in holy living and turning from immorality because of the impending second coming of Christ.

These words from Paul can encourage us today as well.  We too should live with a sense of urgency, knowing that our time on earth is short and that acts of love and unity are enduring.  Anchored in the promises of God, we look toward the future with hope, just as the Thessalonians did.   We know that our efforts are not what earn us God’s favor, but rather they are the most joyful way to leave in these times as we wait for Christ’s return.
