The Book of Colossians - The Cosmic Christ

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” – Colossians 1:15-17

Christ is universal and therefore should be central to our lives.  This is the enduring message of the book of Colossians, a letter written by the Apostle Paul, or one of his contemporaries, to the church in Colossae.

The theological depth and density of the letter have made it a favorite of theologians for generations.  The book strives to help the readers understand that Jesus Christ is not just a momentary historical figure, but that Christ’s death and resurrection carry with it cosmic and universal implications.   Christ is the human form of God meaning Christ was present at creation and a part of all creation.  This makes Christ’s death and resurrection infinitely more significant because it means that death and resurrection are now intimately connected with all creation.

Colossians carefully articulates the theology behind the promises we cling to as Christians – that “Christ became a human and died. And so God made peace with us, and now lets us stand in his presence as people who are holy and faultless and innocent” (Colossians 1:22 CEV).
