The Book of Titus - Representatives of the Faith

“Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show every courtesy to everyone” – Titus 3:1-2

The book of Titus is a pastoral letter addressed from the Apostle Paul to Titus, a young man who is living on the island of Crete, leading a church.   In the letter, the author focuses on the importance for Christian communities to be of benefit to society.  Additionally, there are some very practical instructions for Titus about how to maintain good order in the community so that the gospel can spread.

In our world today where many seem to be giving Christianity a bad name, Titus includes some poignant instructions.  Much of the letter’s premise is focused on the ways that the behavior of Christians in the world is essential for building up the church.

In Titus chapter 3 we read these instructions: “Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show every courtesy to everyone” (Titus 3:1-2).  While our salvation is not dependent on our good works, Titus reminds us that we are always representatives of the faith we confess.  The Church is strengthened when we live in the world as faithful and compassionate Christians.
