The Book of 2 Peter - Holding Fast to Truth in a World of Deception

“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.”
— 2 Peter 1:3

The letter of 2 Peter was written to a church facing a deep crisis of deception. False teachers were twisting the message of the gospel and leading members of the community astray.  In particular, these teachers distorted the central message of grace, articulating it as an easy excuse for immorality.  In order to address these teachings head on, Peter, nearing the end of his life, wrote this letter calling on the community to stand firm in their faith and grow in godliness.

It’s not difficult to see the parallels in our world today. We live in an age of misinformation, where truth is often sacrificed for influence, personal gain, or convenience. Just as in Peter’s time, voices compete for our allegiance, some leading us toward Christ, and others leading us away under the guise of wisdom.  While grace abounds and picks us up when we are led off course, the letter of 2nd Peter also seeks to remind us to live with integrity and compassion, staying close to the teachings of the Gospel.
