Hymn Reflections - The Church of Christ in Every Age

Every generation of the church faces the same question: Who are we called to be right now?

The hymn The Church of Christ in Every Age answers that question with striking simplicity and enormous challenge. Who are we to be?  We are called to be the servant church, not a triumphant church, or a perfect church, or even a comfortable church, but rather a church that serves.

To serve means to care. To see the needs around us and move toward them with compassion rather than avoidance. To share not just our resources but our presence. A servant church doesn’t look away. It kneels down. It notices. It shows up.

The hymn states that the servant church longs to be a partner in Christ’s sacrifice.
This doesn’t just mean that we admire what Jesus did, rather the church participates in Jesus’ ministry. We join in his work of mercy, humility, and reconciliation and enter into a way of life shaped not by power or privilege, but by a love that gives itself away.

The church, at its best, is not a building or an institution. It’s a people who bear Christ’s love into the world. It’s you and me, living with open hands and open hearts, trusting that even small acts matter and carry the very weight of divine grace.

Today’s affirmation:
Christ, clothe me in your compassion.
Let my life reflect your love,
and make your servant church arise in me.
