Rated PG: Thoughts on Psalm 51

Psalm 51
1 Have mercy on me, O God,
  according to your steadfast love;
 according to your abundant mercy,
  blot out my transgressions.

We built a snowman in the front yard one winter and then let the boys “decorate” it using a squirt bottle filled with water dyed with red food coloring. It was not the best choice. When they were done the snowman looked like the victim from a bad horror movie. We had to go out and get new snow to cover up the “slashes”. It was clean again.

The power of God’s mercy can clean us. But God does not just cover up our transgressions. God blots them out. They are gone, forever. The psalmist uses several metaphors to relay God’s incredible redeeming power. The psalmist knew with absolute certainty that God’s mercy would prevail.

God, remind me to ask for the mercy that you are always ready to provide.
