An Everyday Practice by Janet Mortinsen
If you were to look at my phone, you would find an overwhelming number of pictures of sunrises and sunsets. I can’t seem to resist taking a photo of the brilliant or stark or clear or cloudy…you get the idea. I often take these photos while on a walk either in my neighborhood or at the Cherry Creek State Park or wherever I am.
I was asking myself exactly what it was about these images that speak to me. Certainly, the beauty and colors are major factors, but there’s something deeper, a sense of the sacred taking place at the beginning and end of the day. Besides taking pictures while walking, I often listen to an audiobook or podcast if I’m walking solo. I was listening to the Together for Good podcast about Spirituality in Everyday Life when it occurred to me that this was the part that was sacred. I feel called to intentionally use the time to offer up whatever was weighing on me in the morning during sunrise.
Sunset seemed to be the ideal time to offer thanks for all the blessings of that day. Through this practice, my appreciation for sunrises and sunsets has grown and with it a sense of peace at either end of the day.
